KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep ~A Fragmentary Passage~ was a short continuation of the Secret Episode from KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep Final Mix, and chronicles Aqua's time trapped in the Realm of Darkness. It takes place between the events of KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep Final Mix and KINGDOM HEARTS.

Many fans were excited about this entry in the KINGDOM HEARTS HD II.8 Final Chapter Prologue collection, as it marked the first new installment in the franchise since KINGDOM HEARTS 3D Dream Drop Distance. Furthermore, it would be players' first glimpse into the future of the KINGDOM HEARTS franchise, being the first fully playable title for the PlayStation 4 and running on a new game engine. Many combat and graphic assets that would later be used in KINGDOM HEART III were first introduced here.

KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep ~A Fragmentary Passage~ was also included in the KINGDOM HEARTS ~The Story So Far~ collection for PlayStation 4.

This collection was a 2-disc set that came with KINGDOM HEARTS HD I.5 + II.5 ReMIX as well as KINGDOM HEARTS HD II.8 Final Chapter Prologue. There was nothing different about this iteration of KINGDOM HEARTS 0.2 Birth by Sleep ~A Fragmentary Passage~ compared to its inclusion in the KINGDOM HEARTS HD II.8 Final Chapter Prologue collection; it was simply a repackaged collection to include every KINGDOM HEARTS remastered title in one bundle.
