KH Unchained χ > Overview
KINGDOM HEARTS Unchained χ was Square-Enix’s attempt to make the Japan-exclusive browser title, KINGDOM HEARTS χ, more accessible to players. The result was a transition to mobile gaming on Apple and Android devices that was able to reach a broader audience.
KINGDOM HEARTS Unchained χ takes place roughly 100 years before the events of KINGDOM HEARTS Birth by Sleep, and tells the story of the events that led right up to the initial Keyblade War. Players choose from one of five Unions to ally themselves with, though gameplay and story elements ultimately remain unchanged regardless of your choice. From there, players engage in various Missions, each with their own objectives and challenges, to advance the main plot, engage in online competitions, special events, daily bonuses, and more! The game itself is free to play, but features in-app purchases that can be used to unlock special extras to make the gameplay more robust and challenging. Difficulty spikes relatively early on, however, and so players are almost penalized should they choose not to sink any real-world money into the game.
The core gameplay elements involve collecting and upgrading Medals, which feature various characters from previous KINGDOM HEARTS titles, like Sora, Donald, and Goofy. Each Medal has different effects and offers unique advantages and strategies to overcome some of the game’s more difficult objectives. Players slowly collect Jewels through gameplay and in-app purchases, which can be used to participate in random Medal draws, restoring AP for continuous play, increasing the number of Medals you can hold in your inventory, etc. Events cycle through the game frequently, usually lasting anywhere from a week to a month, and offer a heavy emphasis on cooperative play with your fellow Union members. There’s even a chat log that can be used to communicate with other real-world players in your Union so you can coordinate strategies and share Medals.
Overall, KINGDOM HEARTS Unchained χ is a very fun and addicting addition to the KINGDOM HEARTS franchise, and considering how much you get out of it for a free app, and how crucial it’s story will ultimately be to the upcoming KINGDOM HEARTS III, we’d highly recommend checking it out.
