The Kingdom Hearts Timeline So Far…

The Kingdom Hearts series was not released chronologically. Some of the games released after the initial titles in the series actually go back and fill in timelines from before games that were released before them. The timeline below shows the overall time frame in which the entire Kingdom Hearts story (so far) takes place.

Kingdom Hearts Timeline

Kingdom Hearts II / Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix +

Kingdom Hearts II covers the events that take place after Sora has regained his memories from Kingdom Hearts (and therefore, forgotten the events that took place during Chain of Memories). Sora and his friends must once again battle the Heartless, but they must also take on a new enemy, the Nobodies, controlled by the mysterious Organization XIII.

Who is Roxas?

Roxas talking with AxelIntroduced in Kingdom Hearts II was a new type of enemy called a Nobody, which is essentially the empty shell left behind when a strong-hearted person becomes a Heartless. Roxas is actually a Nobody, created when Sora became a Heartless at Hollow Bastion in Kingdom Hearts. Roxas was a member of Organization XIII before the events in Kingdom Hearts II and left to find out more about himself and the reason why the Keyblade chose him (which all took place in 358/2 Days).

Sora and Roxas in Twilight TownThe Twilight Town in which Roxas is currently living when we are introduced to him in Kingdom Hearts II is actually a synthetic town created from data. DiZ is working with Namine and Riku to restore Sora’s lost memories (after the events in Chain of Memories), and because Roxas is the other half of Sora’s heart, Roxas must eventually rejoin with Sora. The digital Twilight Town was designed to hide Roxas from the remaining members of Organization XIII who might be looking for him while Namine finishes restoring Sora’s memories.

How Did Sora Get to Twilight Town?

The Gang in Twilight TownAt the end of Chain of Memories, Sora goes to sleep in one of the pods at Castle Oblivion to get his memories back. At the beginning of Kingdom Hearts II, the pod in which Sora was sleeping is in the basement of the Old Mansion in Twilight Town. This is not to imply that Castle Oblivion and Twilight Town are somehow connected. The pods in which Sora, Donald, and Goofy were sleeping were simply transported to DiZ’s lab in Twilight Town so that DiZ could further monitor Namine’s progress.

Where Did Roxas Go?

The World That Never Was screenshot Roxas SoraAfter the Prologue sequence in Kingdom Hearts II, the game switches to Sora’s point of view, and when he wakes up, Roxas is gone. We don’t meet Roxas again until the very end of the game in The World That Never Was. This is because Roxas rejoined with Sora in the digital Twilight Town before Sora woke up in the real Twilight Town. Roxas remained inside him throughout the entire game, as indicated by all of the scenes in which Sora’s feelings and Roxas’s feelings cross over.

Why Does Riku Look Like Ansem?

Kingdom Hearts Series why does Riku look like Ansem? After the events in Chain of Memories, Riku worked together with DiZ and Namine to reconstruct Sora’s missing memories. Part of that task included capturing Roxas from the Organization and bringing him to Sora so that the two of them could rejoin. In an effort to bring Roxas back to DiZ, Riku fought Roxas (during 358/2 Days), and when Roxas proved to be too strong, Riku was forced to once again rely on the power of darkness. This last-resort move transformed Riku’s body into the form of “Ansem”, and Riku was able to capture Roxas and bring him to DiZ to complete Sora’s heart.

Three Keyblades?

Sora, Riku, King Mickey & The Three KeybladesWithin the universe of the Kingdom Hearts franchise, there exist several different Realms. Each of these Realms has a guardian Keyblade to watch over it. The Realm of Light, for example, is protected by the Keyblade that Sora wields. The Keyblade that King Mickey possesses guards the Realm of Darkness. Riku’s Keyblade, featured in Kingdom Hearts II, is one that has not been seen in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. This Keyblade is the protector of the Realm of Twilight, a Realm that exists between the Realms of Light and Darkness, much like the Realm of Nothing and places like Castle Oblivion and the Keyblade Graveyard. Riku acquired this Keyblade when he learned to wield the light and darkness inside him equally as one.

What Are the Organization Replicas?

Marluxia Organization XIII replica design screenshotAvailable only in Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix +, the Organization Replicas are essentially Lingering Sentiments of the members of Organization XIII that were defeated during the events in Chain of Memories. Sora can enter the dark portals available on various worlds to challenge them and defeat them for good.

What is the Cavern of Remembrance?

Cavern of Remembrance Organization Members in Final MixThe Cavern of Remembrance is a hidden chamber in Hollow Bastion that was once used by the Organization. Each member left behind a copy of themselves in the form of Data in a chamber within the cavern. Sora is able to challenge these Data versions of each Organization member in order to truly defeat them for good. The Cavern of Remembrance is only explorable in Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix +.

What is the Lingering Sentiment?

KH2 Final Mix Extra Boss Battle - Lingering SentimentThe enormous dark portal in Disney Castle (available only in Kingdom Hearts II: Final Mix +) brings Sora, Donald, and Goofy to the Badlands (an area introduced in Birth by Sleep). A mysterious entity waits for them and challenges them to a very intense battle. This figure is actually the spirit of Terra (inhabiting Terra’s armor), left behind after the events in Birth by Sleep. When it sees that Sora is not the rightful owner of the Keyblade he wields (remember that Sora’s Keyblade is actually Terra’s, and was supposed to be passed on to Riku), the Lingering Sentiment assumes that Sora is some other incarnation of Master Xehanort and attacks.
