For those of you who have been playing Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance as non-stop as I have since its release, you may have already reached the end of the game. In that case, you may already know what I’m talking about, but the game’s ending gives possible clues to the next title in the series – which might just be the HIGHLY anticipated Kingdom Hearts III!

A while back, series creator Tetsuya Nomura hinted in an interview that there would be a surprise message during the ending credits of Kingdom Hearts 3D, and that the message would hint at the next title in the series.

During the ending credits, characters from throughout the game appear on the left and right sides of the credits, just as they always have in past Kingdom Hearts installments. This time however, the characters interact with large blue letters that inevitably spell out the secret message that Nomura mentioned in his interview. We’ve recorded the section of credits that reveals the message and have uploaded it to our YouTube Channel so you can see what we’re talking about. You can watch the video below (there are no spoilers, so don’t worry).

For those of you who couldn’t quite make out the message or if you just didn’t want to watch the video, we’ve pieced together the message. The blue letters that the character interact with as the credits roll spell out “THIS LEADS TO KINGDOM HEARTS”. Now this is a rather vague message, but if you keep watching, the credits end and the scene shifts to Sora and Riku walking towards a bright light. As they get closer, their bodies create gaps of darkness in the square of light, revealing three pillars of light (one on each side and one in between them). If this is meant to signify what I think it is, then this means that the entire message reads “THIS LEADS TO KINGDOM HEARTS III”.

However, let’s not jump to conclusions just yet. In another interview a while back (around the time of Re:Coded’s release), Tetsuya Nomura also had said that after the release of Re:Coded, there would be three more titles in the “Xehanort Saga”, and that Re:Coded and Birth by Sleep: Final Mix were not among those three. Assuming that one of those titles is Kingdom Hearts III and that another of those titles is Kingdom Hearts 3D, that leaves one more game unaccounted for – possibly the mysterious Birth by Sleep -Volume II- that was hinted at during the secret ending of Birth by Sleep: Final Mix?

This raises the question: is the next game in the series truly Kingdom Hearts III like the KH3D ending credits suggest, or did that message simply mean that Kingdom Hearts III will pick up where 3D left off and that there is still another potential filler game that go back into the story to fill more plot holes? I suppose only time will tell. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
